Europcar Car Hire - On Airport Car Rental at Keflavik International Airport
Europcar have a substantial operation at Keflavik International Airport, and have advantages that result in them being a company well worth serious consideration if you are visiting Iceland.
They have a substantial branch network around Iceland, and anyone considering a round island trip on Highway 1 will quickly see from the map below that help and assistance is never far away. Given the road and weather conditions can vary considerably from hour to hour the reassurance this brings can be substantial, especially when you consider that Keflavik Airport is around an 8 hour drive from the other end of the island.
As a major international company they run a substantial fleet of new or nearly new cars - including popular models such as 4x4s, SUV's and even 9 seaters. This means they can cope better than most with the peaks and troughs of demand over the year.
They are also based on airport. The majority of car hire firms are a shuttle ride away from Keflavik. This is because the airport levy a sizeable surcharge for any on airport rentals. Whilst this does mean they are not normally the cheapest company at the airport the convenience is sought after.
Navigating Iceland is relatively simple. You head from Keflavik towards the capital Reykjavik, and will shortly before reaching the city find yourself on Highway 1. This road circumnavigates the whole island - if you tried to get around it in one go it would take about 14 hours - but realistically its a 3 or four day trip - and preferably longer. There are so many things to see and do - from snowmobiles, to waterfalls, volcanoes, fjords and whale watching.
Driving in Iceland is relatively straightforward, but always check the weather and road conditions before you leave - the website road.is has all the details. Your car is highly likely to be fitted with spiked tyres, which make travel on snow and ice much safer. Do however always check your spare tyre before leaving the car hire station - as punctures are more common than on the UKs tarred roads.
Regarding insurance there are notable exclusions in Iceland that affect almost all companies. Those that are particularly highlighted in Iceland are:
Damage to the underbody - as its normally caused by driving on unmade up roads. Likewise you cannot drive on unmarked roads or off road. Damage caused by driving through rivers, streams or the like. If you decide to do this you are totally responsible for any damage and related call out costs. Damage to the wheels, tyres, suspension or battery. Damage to two wheel drive vehicles caused by driving on roads marked with an F on public maps or on Kjölur (Road 35) or Kaldidalur (road 550). Only 4x4's can be taken on these roads.
Although all this might seem rather daunting hiring a car is Iceland is a fantastic way to see the island - and will enable you to make the most of your visit to one of the worlds most exciting destinations.
