Why you should book your car hire in Dublin as early as possible.
If there is one location in the world that seems to run out of rental cars it is Dublin. The car hire firms in the city can meet demand on most days but many people visit just for two or three days, especially over weekends and when that happens demand spikes. As the Irish drive on the left hand side of the road they have to source their cars via the UK rather than mainland Europe, and when there is a shortage of new vehicles available in the UK Dublin car hire companies tend to find it difficult to buy new vehicles, which again affects availability.
Also when there is a holiday in Ireland many Irish citizens who now live abroad travel home to celebrate with their relatives - and this again drives huge demand for rental cars. Over St Patricks Day and Christmas, for instance, car hire can sell out weeks, if not months before the big day.
This issue becomes even more critical if you want a particular type of hire car, or have additional requirements this can reduce your choice of rental vehicle still further and this can make early booking even more important. Seven seat car hires in Dublin Airport and car hire using a debit card at Dublin are just two examples of these niches where the number of cars available often fall short of the numbers required.
Lastly when car hire prices in Dublin start to rise they can shoot up at a remarkable rate. We have seen the price of a one week hire of a Fiesta move up an incredible €600 in a day! That is clearly an extreme - but shows why we always recommend booking as soon as you can. With Clarify Car Hire's free cancellation and rebooking policy mean that you are protected, as if the cost of you hire car increases you can sit pretty, but you can cancel and rebook if prices fall.
Where are the car hire desks at Dublin Airport?
There are car rental desks in Terminals 1 and 2. In Terminal 1 they can be found on the right as you enter the Arrivals hall. In Terminal 2, walk through the arrivals area, following the signs for the passageway which takes you to the car parks. The desks are near the lifts which take you to the Multi Storey car park.
Please check the details of your booking for any special instructions from your car hire company and take any paperwork with you, preferably in your hand luggage.
Quick Guide to Hiring a Car at Dublin Airport
Where can I collect/drop off the car at Dublin Airport?
Most car hire companies at Dublin are based in the arrivals hall, with the cars being collected from the nearby car park a short shuttle bus ride away. There are, however, now off airport companies, which normally offer lower prices where you are driven to their car hire compound a short distance away on a bus.
Are there Dublin city centre car hire offices
Hire cars can also be rented from locations in the city centre, with offices across the city - run a quotation above changing the location to just Dublin. The city itself is about 13km (8 miles) from the airport, to the south. The journey by rental car to central Dublin takes about 20 minutes via the R132 and the M1 and M50 motorways. Then follow the signs for the City Centre.
Please be aware that the M50 is a gate-free toll road as it crosses the river - if is not expensive (about €1.90), which you can pre-pay or pay online. Make sure this is done by 8pm the following day as otherwise you might get both the charge passed on by your car hire company and a handling fee added on top.
Dublin City Centre in your Hire Car
If you are just travelling to Dublin for a city centre break you are unlikely to want to hire a car. Getting around the city can be slow, and busy - especially when crossing the River Liffey. Parking is at a premium and you are almost certainly going to have to pay for it, and if you do end up in a no parking area you are likely to find yourself significantly out of pocket! If you do need to contact your car rental company you will be pleased to know though that they all have offices in the city centre and will be happy to help you.
Travelling away from Dublin
If, however, you are planning on travelling further afield your hire car will be perfect. Ireland is a fantastic country with rolling hills, dramatic coastline and beautiful villages that will entice you to visit for longer than your itinerary will allow. The major road network is easy to navigate, and the standard of roads are good - however be alert if you travel off the beaten track - local drivers who know the roads well drive at a pace that can surprise a feint hearted car renter wanting to protect the state of their hire vehicle!
