The majority of car hire firms will not allow their cars to be taken across the border in Cyprus. However, we are delighted to say we do have one company, Pacific Rent a Car, on our panel who can help.
If you run a quote at any Cyprus pick up point use the Cross Border filter as shown here to short cut you to cars that can be taken across the border.
They are based in Kyrenia in the north - but also have an office at Ledra Palace - one of the main crossing points between the South and the North.
However, even though you can take their vehicles over the border, all insurances become void as soon as you drive into Southern Cyprus. Don't worry - We explain below how you can find insurance to cover your hire car in South Cyprus.
What Insurance is required if I am taking my Hire Car into Southern Cyprus?
To cover yourself while in the south you will need:
Third Party cover – this can be bought at the border crossing in Nicosia – we understand that, whilst the border is open 24 hours, the insurance office is only open in the morning. We are currently seeking confirmation of this.
Collision Damage Waiver – you can buy a full third party CDW reimbursement package from a company called Worldwide Insure (You would need their deluxe not standard package). This policy is available through our sister site MoneyMaxim. This cover becomes invalid if you operate the car outside the rental firms terms and conditions.
Please note that this reimbursement policy needs to cover the whole period you hire the car (not just the period you are in South Cyprus). There are other companies who may offer similar cover, but we have had explicit confirmation from Worldwide Insure that they cover both sides of the border.
This means that, if you have an accident or damage occurs while you are South and you are charged for repairs, you can get the money reimbursed by Worldwide Insure. It also covers you for the excess and covers things like tyres, wheels, underbody, roof and glass which are standard exclusions from car hire cover.
If your car breaks down or you have an accident south of the border you will have to arrange to get the car back to the border. Basically, Pacific Cars cannot cross the border to assist you in getting back. This would have to be done at your own expense. We cannot really add anything to this as to date no users have experienced such an eventuality, but we like to be clear as we can on the situation with our customers.
