Like many European countries, Portugal has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic. As things are internationally starting to transition to a new normal, car hire companies are beginning to prepare for both national and international customers to return.
Both domestic and multi-national car hire firms are sensibly putting a lot of focus on ensuring that both their customers and staff are safe. This includes during the pick up, cleaning and return process. We have spoken to our Portuguese partners and found out what special measures that have put in place in response to coronavirus:
- Airauto have received the distinction of Clean & Safe from Turismo de Portugal. This means they have fulfilled all the hygiene measures that the Portuguese government and European Union have legislated. Due to coronavirus, the firm have implemented the following processes:
- Social distancing is being adhered to and there are floor markings to assist with this, only the driver is able to enter the office, passengers and families must stay in the sheltered outdoor waiting area.
- All customers will have to wear masks when in offices or the shuttle bus and the shuttle bus will have a maximum of 4 passengers per trip to help keep as much distance between people as possible.
- The bus will be disinfected every 5 trips through vaporising and will be sprayed with disinfectant every trip.
- All rental vehicles interior and exterior are sanitised and disinfected after each rental.
- Alamo and Enterprise - Team members will adopt the following practices in response to coronavirus:
- Limiting the number of employees in a location, using social distancing between staff and customers.
- Colleagues are frequently washing hands and disinfecting touchable surfaces whilst also minimising customer interaction at vehicle pickup or delivery.
- Alamo and Enterprise Cars and Vans will, as well as being vacuumed and wiped-down, be cleaned using a disinfectant to sanitise key areas between every rental as follows. Key & key fob, centre consoles, cup holders & compartments and areas between seat/console & seat/doorjambs, dashboard, instrument panels, steering wheel and column, accessory panel, door interior, handles (interior and exterior) and pockets, mirrors and other high touch areas.
- Measures are also in place to immediately isolate and quarantine any vehicle if needed.
- Best Deal are doing the following in response to coronavirus:
- Best Deal are ensuring they adhere to the Portuguese Government guidance to protect both hirers and staff from coronavirus.
- Centauro have implemented the following in response to coronavirus:
- Centauro have increased their cleaning of vehicles to ensure all areas are thoroughly cleaned.
- A sticker goes across the driver door stating that the car has been disinfected and is coronavirus free. If the sticker is broken then the customer will know that someone has opened the door after it has been cleaned.
- Europcar have implemented the following in response to coronavirus:
- Vehicles will be subject to rigorous cleaning measures after each rental, as well as a 'zero contact' policy with Europcar Mobility Group employees in stations in response to coronavirus.
- Guerin have been accredited as Clean & Safe by Turismo de Portugal, having implemented the following in response to coronavirus:
- Frequent cleaning of locations.
- Mandatory use of masks and gloves by all staff.
- Social distancing adopted for all human interactions.
- All cars thoroughly disinfected between hires and reduced people at locations and involved in car processing.
- OK Rent a Car have implemented the following in response to coronavirus:
- Mandatory use of mask and gloves for staff cleaning vehicles.
- Cleaning the interior (handles, window controls, steering wheel, dashboard, buttons etc) with disinfectant and using an Ozone machine on the interior.
- The exterior of the vehicle is also deeply cleaned.
- Their offices are being cleaned in both the morning and at midday, with special attention paid to the common areas, alcohol based sanitiser is available for both staff and customers.
- Shuttle buses are cleaned 2 or 3 times a day, this includes cleaning of the interior of the vehicle and use of an Ozone machine.
- Masks and gloves are mandatory.
- Surprice are doing the following in response to coronavirus:
- Surprice are adhering to all protocols within Portugal.
