What are the advantages of choosing to rent a 4-wheel drive car?
Cars with four-wheel or all-wheel drive are built to withstand road surfaces that may be more uneven than regular roads. Iceland is a good example of where 4WD cars are popular. Many of the roads in Iceland are covered in gravel and an all-wheel drive car can give you more control as well as offer a greater degree of comfort - Surely a must for a holiday!
Four-wheel drive cars also provide better grip and traction on wet or snowy roads so are ideal for journeys to mountains or winter driving. Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the USA also have a strong demand for all-wheel drive cars.
What is the difference between AWD and 4WD?
An AWD car responds to the road and type of journey you are taking. It will choose to send more power to either the front or back wheels when it senses it is needed. AWD is controlled by the car automatically leaving you to concentrate on your driving. With a 4WD car, the power is equally distributed between all four wheels at all times. 4WD cars are better for serious off-roading but, unless you have had specific permission from your car rental company to do this, then either an AWD or a 4WD vehicle would be a great option for your holiday car hire.
Rent a four-wheel drive car for your ski holiday
Travelling to your ski resort can be smooth sailing when you are on the main roads but once you hit the smaller villages you can find the snow and ice make driving conditions more difficult. Skidding can be a hazard. In most places, grit is used to help provide extra traction but narrower roads and driveways can be left out. 4WD drive cars can give you more grip and control so that you can reach your destination safely. Many mountain roads have steep drops to the side and an AWD car will give you more confidence in your driving.
If I hire an SUV will it be 4 wheel drive?
No not necessarily. An SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) was originally an American term for cars that could cope with off-road or more difficult driving but the scope of SUVs has grown so they now include cars that are usually a bit taller and may look more rugged but they are certainly not always all-wheel drive.
