Our Guide to Debit Card Car Hire
Can I hire a car with a debit card?
Many people do not have or prefer not to use a credit card but would like to hire a car. Car rentals that accept a debit card are the solution! There are many car hire companies that will take a debit card instead of a credit card and with Clarify Car Hire they are easy to find. And here’s how.
Get a debit card car hire quote for your preferred location, pick up dates and times
By using the link above we have already applied our filter which tailors your quote to only car rental companies that will offer hires using just a debit card but this filter can be selected when running any car hire quote.
So I can turn up to the car hire desk without a credit card?
Yes! When we say they accept a debit card, that’s exactly what we mean. When you turn up to pick up your car, they will not ask you to provide a credit card.
What happens about the security deposit if I use a debit card for my car hire?
You will be asked to put any security and fuel deposit - if there is one - on your debit card. As it is a debit card, the amount will, in most cases, be taken from your account. You will need to make sure you have enough funds available and be aware that it can take up to 30 days for funds to be returned to you after you have ended your hire.
Many car rental packages for use by debit card holders require the renter to take out their additional insurance. This often means that the security deposit is lower or removed completely.
What will I need when I get to the rental desk if I hire a car with a debit card?
Your Clarify Car Hire voucher – this will be emailed to you as soon as you have paid your deposit and booked your car. This will have all the information you need such as payment details, where to go to collect your car and the contact details for your car hire company should you be delayed.
Your driving licence – check yours is in date and don’t forget to bring driving licences for any additional drivers too. If your driving licence is not in the Roman alphabet (for example Hebrew or Mandarin) then you may be required to have an international licence. The required licence will be on your voucher.
A valid payment card – This will need to be in the name of the lead driver – the person who is signing for the car – and have enough funds to cover any security deposit and the balance of your rental which is shown on your car hire voucher too. The debit card should be linked to a bank account. Prepaid or top-up cards are generally not accepted.
Other documents – Sometimes you may be required to bring further paperwork for proof of address – usually when you are hiring in your country of residence - or you may need to have a return flight booked. Always read through your Clarify Car Hire voucher when you receive it, as all the information about which documents are required and which cards are accepted will be on there.
