How does hiring with a debit card work?
The majority of car rental firms allow you to use your debit card only with their Premium or Zero Excess package. This is really handy as these packages include their full insurance and more often than not reduce the excess to zero. There may still be a small deposit to pay but your liability is smaller as you would not need to pay if there was, for example, a scratch on the side of the vehicle. This is our recommended way to go, taking the car hire companies Zero Excess package makes the whole experience much easier when using a debit card!
Some car hire companies allow you to use your debit card for their Standard package. In this case you would be liable for the full deposit and excess amount, so if the worst was to happen and the vehicle was stolen or damage you would need to ensure that you have the excess amount available to pay the car hire company.
The key thing to note when hiring with a debit card is that if there is a deposit on your car hire, this will be taken as a payment onto your debit card. Once you return the car hire the deposit is then refunded should there be no damage, theft or traffic fines etc. This is different than hiring with a credit card where the deposit amount is generally preauthorised (also known as blocked) and released at the end of the rental instead of being taken as a payment and then refunded. The refund can take up to 30 days to reach your bank account, this is not due to the car rental company but due to banking systems in the country you're hiring and the country your bank is in. Do also be aware that exchange rate fluctuations may mean that you are refunded slightly less or more than you originally paid for the deposit.
How do I know which firms accept debit cards?
The easiest way is to visit our debit card page, where the filter for debit card hires is pre-selected for you.
However, you can run a quote from any page on our website and we have a really handy filter so you know exactly which firms will allow you to hire with a debit card. Once you have run a quote you will see a filter down the left hand side. Here you can select if you would like 'Debit Card Accepted' car hire deals. If you click the filter all the vehicles which show will allow you to hire with a debit card.
